It’s about time!

Well done Nintendo for pushing the boundaries again. From a company that has pioneered consoles, to falling behind but continuing to carve out their own path. In a world where mobile gaming is so popular yet so limited – clunky controls with tactical feedback, constant regurgitation of the same games over and over. Nintendo have stood up and said this is how it should be.

Sony attempted something with the PS Vita but fell short. Lack of great titles, the introduction of interesting but almost useless touch sensors replacing controller buttons like L3 and L2. The (almost) inability to connect the Dual Shock 4 to it. It was a portable left wanting.

We live in a time where we carry around computers in our pockets, that can access almost anything with a few taps. Yet Next Gen console gaming is stuck in your living room, or until lately thanks to PS streaming, on a computer on you home wifi network.

In steps Nintendo Switch with what looks to be full console games that can go from the lounge room, to the bus, to an airplane and even the local basketball court. What freedom! The ability to take a AAA title everywhere is incredible and overdue.

Maybe not overdue, we live in a time where we’re spoilt with technology progress and I’m getting impatient. I’ve just had enough of the mobile gaming focus on touch screens and 18 different incarnations of Flappy Bird. I want more from mobile gaming, I want to take Fallout 4 or Skyrim with me and not leave performance behind – and I don’t think that’s too much to ask.

I’m looking forward to further announcements on features and games but, as the internet has reacted, things are looking good so far!

Let’s hope there are some awesome titles coming along with what was already previewed in the launch trailer.
